Sanskrit – the classical language of the world

Forming the foundation of many present-day languages of India, Sanskrit is the oldest language of this country. Even languages like Hindi and Urdu owe its origin to Sanskrit. The earliest form of Sanskrit, known as Vedic, was the language of communication of the Aryans. By 100 B.C., Sanskrit had died, but much like Latin in the West, it remained the language of choice for poetry and drama in the royal courts. Sanskrit was also the foundation of many scientific, philosophical and religious texts and theories.

Considered by many scholars a language as romantic and subtle as French, Bangla is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language that found roots in the Indo-European language family way back in the 500 BC. According to some, the language saw the daylights in the South Asian regions as the truest successor of Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit, inheriting bits and pieces (well, chunks, if you demand) from all the three since 1000 CE, though counter opinions are galore. The contradictions state that Bangla took form as a separate language in 1000 AD; however, a deeper study would reveal the stages in between – it was the adulterated Magadhi Prakrit (apabhrangsha and abahattha) that formed the foundation of the archaic Bangla along with Oriya and Assamese, among which, there used to exist a negligible amount of linguistic difference till Medieval Bengali originated in 1400 AD and started ruling supreme.

Bengali, also called Bangla, is the official language of Bangladesh, and the Indian States of West Bengal and Tripura. There are over 200 million native speakers of this language across the world and it has the pride of place as the 5^th “most spoken” language in the world (after Mandarin, Spanish, English and Hindustani (Hindi-Urdu). Bengali is the second most commonly spoken language in India (after Hindi). Yet, interestingly, there are crucial differences between the spoken and written forms of the language between Bangladeshi Bengali (with intra-country variations) and Bengali spoken in West Bengal.

Some interesting facts about Urdu language

In Pakistan, Urdu is spoken and understood by a majority of urban dwellers in such cities as Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta, Hyderabad, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan and Sukkur.
Urdu is used as the official language in all provinces of Pakistan.
It is also taught as a compulsory language up to high school in both the English and Urdu medium school systems. This has produced millions of Urdu speakers whose mother tongue is one of the regional languages of Pakistan such as Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Gujarati, Kashmiri, Balochi, Siraiki, and Brahui.
Most of the nearly five million Afghan refugees of different ethnic origins (such as Pakhtun, Tajik, Uzbek, Hazarvi, and Turkmen) who stayed in Pakistan for over twenty-five years have also become fluent in Urdu.
In India, Urdu is spoken in places where there are large Muslim majorities or cities, which were bases for Muslim Empires in the past. These include parts of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Bhopal, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Mysore.
Some Indian schools teach Urdu as a first language and have their own syllabus and exams; Indian madrasahs also teach Arabic as well as Urdu.
India has more than 2900 daily Urdu newspapers. Newspapers such as Daily Salar, Daily Pasban, Siast Daily, Munsif Daily and Inqilab are published and distributed in Bangalore, Mysore, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. Read rest of the article here

In addition, 1/4 to 1/3 of the people in the world understand and speak English to some degree. Punjab – How far yet so near!

Punjab is situated in the northwestern corner of India. It is bounded on the north by the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, on the east by Himachal Pradesh and the union territory of Chandigarh. The majority of the population is Sikh, the largest minority is Hindu, and a very small percentage is Muslim, Buddhist, Christian.
